Easy Zero Waste Bathroom Swaps

Having a zero waste bathroom isn’t so hard, if you have the right tools for the job. You should use up whatever you have in your bathroom already before purchasing a zero waste option. This way, you’re not wasting a product just because it’s packaged in plastic. You really don’t need that many products to have a functional bathroom. We at put together some of our personal favorite zero waste bathroom swaps that are highly recommended.

Scrub brush

One Ocean Body Brush – Designed in Finland, this natural wood and bristle body brush has been part of the traditional Scandinavian bathing and wellness ritual for centuries. Ergonomically shaped, the smooth contours fit perfectly in the hand.  In addition to exfoliating, cleaning pores, increasing energy and reducing cellulite, our favorite benefit of dry brushing is that it stimulates lymph flow to help the body detoxify naturally. For best results, add exercise to your regime and condition after brushing and bathing with our Body Boost Duo.

Shampoo and Conditioner

There are a lot of misconceptions about what constitutes a zero waste toothbrush. It doesn’t help that innumerable companies falsely claim their toothbrushes are compostable.

An ideal zero waste toothbrush would be 100% home compostable, including the packaging, handle, and bristles with no disassembly required. If it doesn’t satisfy that then the product is not truly zero waste.

Packaging is pretty self-explanatory. The same rules apply to every zero waste product we seek: it must be either naked or come in reusable (i.e. glass and metal) containers or compostable ones.

Natural toothpaste does take some time to adjust to because it’s very different from conventional toothpaste. It has a different texture, isn’t sweet and it can be clay-like. Uncle Harry’s make natural toothpaste containing antibacterial ingredients in reusable glass jars with a plastic lid.

Makeup Remover

The Face Halo is like a plush towel in cotton round form. The 3D texture is actually really good at scrubbing off mascara and getting lipstick out of the small crevices—and that’s without makeup remover. Also it’s the size of about three classic cotton rounds, so you can get your whole face done with one. After they are dirtied up, you can just throw these in the wash with the towels.

Period Products

Use reusable pads in combination with a silicone cup, such as this OrganiCup Menstrual Cup, one of the softest cups on the market and can be used for up to 12 hours at a time.  It also comes packaged in a recycled, biodegradable carton and a storage pouch made from 100% organic cotton. Not something we really think about when talking about zero-waste but it is important. No contraceptive is zero-waste. IUDs and implants are the closest; they last for three to five years and only have the packaging and medical equipment required for insertion, but they are not suitable for everyone. Speak to your doctor about your options.

Companies like L Condoms, Glyde, Sustain and Sir Richard’s make vegan and more ethical condoms. Additionally, they either perform HIV/AIDS research or donate condoms to developing countries.
