We’re continuing our countdown to Earth Day with another blog post. Today, we're talking about Earth Day pledges and what they mean to a sustainable lifestyle year-round. An Earth Day pledge is a pledge to do better when it comes to protecting the Earth and conserving the environment. It's a way you can take one day to make a change for the whole year. And that's what's so great about it: it isn't just for a day. It's a 24/7, 365 kind of deal that you can create for yourself based on what works best for your lifestyle. Like I mentioned in the previous blog post, it's also a great way to get your kids involved in the effort to be more eco-friendly. They can learn more about what it takes to care for the environment, because it's never too early to show them why it matters. But why choose a pledge? In much the same way we make New Year's resolutions, a pledge is a verbal or written agreement with yourself to do what you can to be more sustainable. A sustainable lifestyle is beneficial to the environment, and that’s why it’s so important.
There are tons of ways you can make a pledge to the Earth and different options you can mix and match together to write something powerful for your life moving forward.
- Remove single use plastics from your consumption
- Replace animal products with plant based foods
- Be water conscious
- Reduce your carbon footprint
- Opt for reusable products
- Go paper free
- Plant a garden
- Wash laundry in cold water
- Air dry laundry
- Use rags instead of paper towels
- Pick up trash
This is only just a starter list. There are so many ideas out there.
You can write it in the form of a list or as a traditional pledge, either of which you can hang up somewhere in your house or apartment so you can always see it. Have some fun with it, too! Whip out some craft paper and stickers and markers to make it truly shine. Or if you're going the paperless route, make a phone wallpaper using Canva. You can also check out Pinterest for more ideas to help you along in the process. It can also help you to write a more traditional pledge, if you'd like to go a little more formal.
